Early Symptoms of Macular Degeneration

Macular Degeneration

Early stages of macular degeneration normally do not present any symptoms. If you are, however, experiencing any symptoms of macular degeneration, you should see an eye doctor as soon as possible. If you are looking for an optometrist in Chicago, we can help you here at Eye Society. If you are over the age of 45, you should have an eye exam as well as follow up exams every 2 to 4 years. You should check your vision every single day if you are dealing with macular degeneration and notify your doctor right away if you experience any changes in your eyes or vision.

Symptoms

One of the first signs that you may experience is a sudden or even gradual change in your vision quality. Straight lines may also appear distorted to you. As a result, you can experience a loss in your central vision. Some other symptoms that you may experience are:

  • Blurry or dark areas within the center of your vision
  • Change in perception of color (normally only in rare cases)

Tests & Diagnosis

When you visit your eye doctor for an eye exam, he or she can detect age-related macular degeneration. The earlier the diagnosis, the sooner you will be able to start treatment that will help with the delay of symptoms. An optometrist will be able to test your vision and take a closer look at your retina. Yellow deposits under the retina are normally what doctors look for to identify the presence of macular degeneration. If the doctor thinks you may have macular degeneration, you may have to have an optical coherence tomography or fluorescein angiography. Both tests are used to examine the vessels in the retina.

Treatment options can range from any of the following:

  • Anti-angiogenic drugs
  • Laser therapy
  • Photodynamic laser therapy
  • Low vision aids
