Healthy Aging and Your Eyes
Healthy aging is something we all strive for. Many things contribute to healthy aging such as the food you eat, proper exercising, and regular medical check-ups from time to time. Part of your regular medical care should be a yearly eye exam with our optometrists in Chicago. Eye Society is a full-service vision practice that treats the entire family. We believe in our eye health evaluation which is part of every eye exam that we perform.
Healthy eyes are an important part of healthy aging. Not only do you want your vision to be clear and crisp, but you want your eyes to be healthy. Many diseases that affect other parts of your body, also affect your eyes. Be sure to advise our optometrist of any health issues you may have before the exam. Some diseases show themselves in your eyes before they have any other symptoms.
There are some preventative measures you can take to keep your eyes healthy as you age. When you are out in the sun, wear sunglasses that block UV rays, and wear a wide-brimmed hat whenever possible. If you look at screens a lot, take a break every twenty minutes or so and give your eyes a rest. If you are a smoker, this is the time to stop. Studies have shown smoking increases your risk of eye diseases such as glaucoma, cataracts, and age-related macular degeneration.
If you have medical issues such as diabetes or high blood pressure it is important to keep them under control. Both of these conditions can cause severe damage to your eye and even lead to blindness. Our optometrists will administer a dilated eye exam so your entire eye is visible and we can check the progression of the condition by examining your eyes.
